Rice Hulls: A great way to amend a heavy clay soil is to work in rice hulls, (the fibrous material left over after rice is processed.) Although rice hulls are devoid of nutrients except for small traces of nitrogen rice hulls are still beneficial because they will loosen heavy soil by adding organic matter that helps water retention, percolation and nutrient holding properties. Because of its low nutrient value it is best to blend rice hulls with compost or other organic soil amendments to insure plants have plenty of nutrients available to them. |
